A support gathering, Serve With Skirts Movement, on Wednesday, held a quiet dissent at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to request incorporation of skirts as a major aspect of the uniform for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Members of the group, comprising of young boys and girls, held banners with inscriptions like “there is a difference between the world and the daughters of God” and “our sisters cannot dress like men. They should be decently covered” with some of the female members dressed in Khaki skirts.
As indicated by them, after quite a long time after year, female corps individuals are pestered at direction camps for declining to wear skirts. This, they stated, is a break of their central human rights under Section 38(1) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
A leader of the group, Udochi Emmanuel, said the use of trousers are bringing out impropriety in the camps. During the 1970s and 1980s, she stated, “we had our moms wearing skirts and we need to return to that.”
“We have requested exception (sic) severally. NYSC has not given that as a choice, they have made it a necessary one-year administration for everybody beneath the age of 30 and they are commanded to wear those clothes.
“We have just begun arrangements (with government) and we trust that from this exchange we will get a positive reaction,” she said.
When inquired as to whether don’t they get what they are looking for Ms Emmanuel said they “may need to request review in the court.”
A corps part, Patience Noble, who was a piece of the dissent, advised writers that she was presented on Ebonyi State for administration and when she demanded wearing skirt, she was approached to leave camp.
“As a resident of my nation, I reserve the privilege to serve the country simply like each other graduate has. They demanded that I wear this trouser or leave the camp. During the camp there were loads of put-down and mortification – one of military tore the skirts I was wearing on my body.”
The protest comes scarcely two months after two individuals from the 2019 NYSC Stream C in Ebonyi State, were sent home from camp for declining to wear trouser.
The NYSC representative in the state, Ngozi Ukwuoma, clarified that when the couple were addressed and questioned, they revealed that they couldn’t wear the white shorts and the trouser given to them by the NYSC since it was against their faith.
