A report by Nigerian Tribune shows that the suspended former acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, avoided his re-arrest on Thursday, July 16, for his decision to remain in the official residence of the EFCC chairman.

Source assembled that in the wake of going through nine days in detainment, Magu was discharged from police care on abandon the night Wednesday, July 15, on the request for the Justice Ayo Salami-drove presidential panel investigating his stewardship as EFCC acting chairman.

The troubled Magu was confined at the Force Criminal Investigation Department at Garki Area 10 in Abuja from Monday, July 6, when he was arrested by a consolidated group of versatile police officers and agents of the Department of State Services (DSS) agents in rush hour gridlock at Wuse II till Wednesday, July 15.

The report said that upon his release Magu headed for the official residence of the EFCC chairman at Maitama, where he passed the night.

Magu was said to have a feeler that he would have been re-arrested for his indiscretion on the morning of Thursday, July 17, and immediately moved out of the Maitama residence to his own home at Karu.

The newspaper noted learnt on Friday, July 17, that the policemen guarding the ex-EFCC chairman withdrawn by police authorities on Thursday, July 16.

Talking on Magu’s arranged rearrest, his attorney, Wahab Shittu, in any case, revealed to Tribune Online on the phone on Friday, July 17, that in spite of the fact that Magu’s police escort were withdrawn, they were later restored to him.

“Let me make this clear: his security details were withdrawn but they have been restored,” Shittu said.

Asked to react to the concerns raised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the ongoing investigation of Magu following his (Shittu’s) claim that the Justice Salami-led investigation panel would clear his client and reinstate him, Shittu said he didn’t want to make “a political reaction.”

The PDP had said in an announcement given by its publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, that, “Nigerians were shocked when counsel for suspended EFCC acting chairman, Wahab Shittu, boastfully declared that he had Magu’s instruction to inform the public that “he will be reinstated to the office.”

A source near Magu focused on was cited to have said on Friday, July 17, that regardless of his present travails, the suspended EFCC chairman remained unshaken and had called for Nigerians to own the fight against corruption.

In the interim, source had recently announced that the presidential board investigating Magu blamed for selling recuperated land properties to friends.

The charges which were contained in a report of the presidential committee on the audit of recovered assets also said some of the recovered properties were taken over by EFCC officials.

The board claimed that recovered properties were sold to Magu’s friends and cronies at giveaway prices or taken over by some top EFCC officials.
